FUCK YOU DIY
So a few weeks ago we bought a new vanity and tall cupboard from Ikea. On Friday and Saturday I managed to assemble it all. That was to be the end and we were going to call a plumber to do the rest. The boy got thinking and measuring and decided that we could indeed do it ourselves. So today was spent trying to do this so called easy task. Firstly we had to unscrew the old vanity from the wall- not easy when the screwdriver butts up against the sink and the is no free movement to unscrew. 20 minutes later the screws were half way out and not budging a cm more. Next I got the blade and cut around the unit- this seemed to slowly dislodge the sink and we managed to pull it off. The boy started playing with the plumbing and managed to unscrew half the pipes. We than realised that half the pipes had been glued together so after a call to my dad we took a visit to the hardware store. We stood in the plumbing section looking at lots of different pipes- totally clueless. We thought we were on the right track and picked up some pipes to buy. I convinced the boy to go get some help- lucky for us as we were about to purchase pipes for under the kitchen sink! So we showed the dude my dodgy sketch and he managed to select the pipes we needed. So we get back to the house all motivated to continue and we realise there is no budging the cupboard. Maybe because there is a tap on the wall and bits of pipes hanging out stopping us lifting the cupboard out. So the boy gets the drill and started making little holes all over to try and make the holes bigger so we could maneuver it a bit better. The drill dies so I am left to use a little saw to make these cuts- not easy and not fun! About 2 hours later and with the help of a jigsaw we finally have the cupboard out. Now the nice thing is they forgot to tile under the cupboard so there is just dirty concrete hole. We thought no problems the new unit will cover this hole- Wrong! So now we need to tile the bloody floor. Luckily spare tiles came with the house- I placed the tiles in the spots but what a surprise we need to build it up to the same level as the other tiles. Now I have no idea and ring my father in desperation (he is a builder), he agrees to some up next week and tile and help us with the rest- thank fuck for that! So now we realise we have to paint and take the old mirror off. Easy? No. The boys fights with the mirror for half an hour and in the process of taking the mirror off half the wall comes off too! Yippee now we need to spack fill (the walls are rendered) at this stage we give up and leave the house for a few hours- end of DIY.
Moral of this story- never attempt to DIY it's not worth the savings you think you will make. I might feel more optimistic about this after a good nights sleep. But I still need to paint the entire bathroom before the weeks end- fun!
